If there’s one creative gap that shows up more consistently than any other across established DTC brands, it’s this: no founder story content in the ad account at all.
Why It Matters More Than It Seems
People stop scrolling for a real person before they stop scrolling for a product. A founder story works because it builds emotional connection before any product feature enters the conversation — it’s relatable and authentic in a feed full of polished, faceless brand content.
This makes it the single highest-leverage missing piece for most brands, because it’s the one creative framework that works on someone with zero prior context on the brand. A comparison ad or an ingredient breakdown assumes the viewer already has some familiarity. A founder story doesn’t need that — it works on a total stranger.
What It Actually Looks Like
The format that performs best is simple: a founder speaking directly to camera, 30–60 seconds, in a casual, unpolished setting — or a static image of the founder paired with a longer caption telling the real story. No production budget required.
The common thread across categories — apparel, food & beverage, beauty, or otherwise — is a specific, personal problem, not a generic “we’re passionate about quality” statement. A founder explaining they couldn’t find a product that fit their exact need, so they built it themselves, is far more compelling than a polished mission statement. Specificity is what makes it believable.
Why Brands Skip This
Founder story content often gets skipped for one of two reasons: either the founder is uncomfortable being on camera, or the story exists somewhere on the website’s “About” page and nobody’s thought to pull it into paid creative.
The second reason is the more common one — and the easier one to fix. If your brand has a real founding story, a specific moment that led to starting the business, that story is very likely sitting completely unused in your ad account right now, doing no work at all for cold audiences who’ve never heard of you.
Where to Start
You likely don’t need to create anything from scratch. Most founders already have the story — it just needs to be told directly to camera or written out as a caption, rather than buried on a page most cold visitors never reach. It costs almost nothing to produce, and for most brands, it’s the single fastest gap to close.
